The short version

Jot rewrites text you choose to rewrite. Before your text reaches any AI provider, sensitive details (emails, phone numbers, names, addresses) are redacted on your device and restored locally afterward. We do not store your text or your rewrites on our servers.

1. Information the extension accesses

When you trigger Jot (Ctrl+Shift+Space), the extension reads the text you have selected or are editing, so it can send it for rewriting. It does not read pages in the background, and it does not collect your browsing history.

2. On-device PII redaction

Before any text leaves your device, Jot detects and masks personally identifiable information, email addresses, phone numbers, person names, and street addresses, replacing them with placeholders (e.g. [EMAIL_1]). The AI provider only receives the redacted version. After the rewrite returns, the original values are restored locally in the extension. Redacted values are never transmitted.

3. Where your text goes

Your (redacted) text is sent to an AI provider to generate the rewrite:

  • Built-in model: sent to the codevu rewrite service (codevu.com) for processing. It is not stored and not used for training. A monthly free-tier counter is kept per install (100 rewrites/month), nothing else.
  • Bring your own key: sent directly from your browser to the provider you configured (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, or OpenRouter). Your text never passes through our servers in this mode. Your API key is stored locally in your browser.

4. What we store

We do not store your text or rewritten content on our servers. Extension preferences (such as per-site writing voices and settings) are stored locally in your browser via Chrome storage. If you contact us for support, we retain only what you send us.

5. What we do not do

  • We do not sell your data to third parties.
  • We do not use your text to train AI models.
  • We do not use tracking cookies or cross-site analytics.

6. Open source

Jot is open source. The redaction and data-handling behavior described above can be independently verified in the public repository: github.com/ganeshks1011/jot.

7. Changes to this policy
